BURBANK, Calif. (AP) — Law enforcement officers in Southern California have launched a massive search in rugged mountain terrain for a missing FBI agent who was said to be despondent and possibly suicidal.

About 100 FBI agents, 40 sheriff's department rescuers and a dozen local police officers participated in the search for Los Angeles-based Special Agent Stephen Ivens, who remained missing late Saturday. He was described as an avid hiker and runner.

FBI Special Agent Steve Gomez said dogs had tracked Ivens' scent toward the rugged Verdugo Mountains, east of Burbank, but searchers were fanning out throughout Los Angeles County.

Ivens, 35, was last seen by family members Thursday evening, KABC-TV reported (http://bit.ly/K6vDfr). He left his Burbank home the next morning on foot and had not been seen since, FBI officials said at a news conference.

Ivens was distraught and authorities fear he may have harmed himself, according to KABC-TV. Officials did not say why Ivens was distraught.

A search of his home did not turn up his handgun and police believe he may have taken it with him.

Ivens was described by FBI colleagues as well liked. Married with a one-year-old child, he has been working for the FBI for the past three years in the national security area. Prior to that, he worked as a Los Angeles police officer for eight years.

Seems a straightforward story to me. Why read a conspiracy into it? It wouldn't make much sense to write this stuff in advance because it may impede the plan.

Maybe that despondent noise is made up. Don't think that could happen? Just look at the wild speculations just inches down this very page! Maybe he went for a run and slipped up. Took his gun? Absolutely: there's wild boar in thos ravines. I've been there, lived in the neighborhood, jumped brush fires in those mountains back when I was barely grown. Easy to get hurt there, easy to get covered up. That's close to where people drive off hairpin turns and don't get found for years, disappear with entire vehicles wrapped around themselves.

"Officials didn't say why Ivens was distraught." So, they know why but aren't telling us. Ivens probably learned something he wasn't suppose to know about and now he's distraught.Just speculation but that's all any of us can do at this point. But with the FBI, anything is possible, anything. Need to find this guy b4 something bad happens, either to him or some1 else.

Missing for only 24 hrs? Have anyone considered he is just out hiking? Also when do police and FBI search for someone after only 24hrs being missing?

Looks like someone was about to spill the beans. Whistle blowers are often confused with armed suicidal FBI agents, and must be killed for "the public good."

Not to minimize their response, but I don't think that an ordinary citizen who did the same thing would garner the same response. The message this sends isn't a pleasant one for the average American. But FBI families can sure rest better.
