So you thought that only Bollywood films believe in recycling the same script for at least eight movies? Well, then you might want to take a closer look at certain Hollywood films, especially those that belong to the slasher genre. Gone are the glorious days of the Texas Chain Saw Massacre and Friday the 13th, slasher flicks these days follow the same script, same sequence, same screenplay and have become about as predictable as all those K-soaps. So much that even you could just put on the director’s cap and make your own slasher flick. We tell you the basic ingredients that go into the making of these films:
Each slasher flick contains one hapless protagonist, surrounded by a circle of friends, one of which is inevitably an Afro –American who more often than not, ends up dying in a gruesome manner. This gang of friends is adept at everything, especially at getting themselves into trouble. And to add a bit of plausibility to the proceedings, the friends decide to go on a trip to a remote hotel or a farmhouse in the middle of nowhere. Just so that they can’t call up for help until the climax. (Wonder why they bother with that; it wouldn’t occur to them to call for help even if you placed them in the headquarters of the FBI!) While most normal people would just sit still once the storm warning is out or the report of the escaped convict is released, these people go about sniffing out danger. Of course, it never pops in their pretty little minds to just stay put in one place and stick close together. Nah, why make it so difficult for the serial killer? One of the friends has to have a tiff with her boyfriend and decide to sulk in a remote corner which makes her a sitting duck when the big bad murderer comes around. And to make it even easier for the axe wielding sinister killer, another one of the friends will slink off to hunt for the now – dead girl and one by one the heads start rolling.
Thus the psychopath killer comes into the scene, who wears a deranged look and whose solution to the city’s overpopulation problem is slashing off the heads of all who cross his path, be it the hero, the maid, or even a cat. Don’t exercise your imagination much when it comes to deciding a weapon for him; a crude scissor or an axe or even a knife does the trick. He smoothly piles up bodies with none being the wiser; he coolly roams about the hotel / farmhouse with just a baseball cap in terms of disguise and an axe held right out and yet no one seems to notice.
But don’t judge him too fast, ‘coz that’s where the twist in the story comes. This guy is on a revenge mission (and is also incidentally a bit mentally unbalanced), the group of friends have severely wronged him, either by knocking him down unintentionally in a road accident, (I Know What You Did Last Summer) or he was once upon a time a huge admirer of the protagonist before she spurned him (Prom Night) or was the victim of a freak accident (Sorority Wars). Whatever the cause for his misery, after precisely one year of cooling his heels, he gets all fired up and starts with the slashing.
Then the movie will slowly edge towards the climax, where the protagonist confronts the killer and escapes (She miraculously subdued the killer who has lined the entire place with bodies? Forget martial arts and all those rigorous exercises, they should simply lock all aspiring soldiers with a serial killer!) And this is the story that follows film after film.
