A Henderson County man accused of stealing thousands of dollars from an elderly couple pleaded guilty Tuesday in Henderson Circuit Court.
Barry N. Gray, 46, 2800 block of Zion Road, entered a plea to theft by deception of $10,000 or more. Formal sentencing is June 4.
Henderson County Sheriff's Detective John Book said Gray is accused of stealing from an elderly couple with whom he was acquainted.
Book said Gray approached the couple asking for $10,000 to complete a construction project in Evansville. He told them he would pay the money back, Book said.
Book said Gray did not reimburse the couple and they reported the crime.
An investigation revealed that the project was fictitious, Book said. Gray was then charged with theft of $10,000 or more.
"Gray has been convicted in the past of felonies related to home improvement frauds in Indiana, as well as theft charges in Ohio," Book said. "The charges go back to 1989."
"We've received complaints about Gray for several years" in connection with incidents of home improvement fraud, Book said. However, in Kentucky home improvement frauds are considered civil matters "and no charges could be brought," he said.
Law enforcement and members of city and county government met with Rep. David Watkins, asking him to sponsor a bill which would make home improvement frauds a criminal matter in Kentucky "to protect consumers," Book said.
Rep. Watkins did sponsor the bill, called House Bill 180, Book said.
"It's currently dead in the House ... but we're hoping the Legislature will revisit it next session," Book said.
As for the case against Gray, Book said, "We're still getting complaints, so the investigation is continuing."
