Rep. Tim Johnson (R-Ill.) on Thursday said that the federal government's debt was "strangling" the country and has the potential of destroying the American Dream.
“This is a problem that’s going to destroy our economy, folks," said Johnson, as reported by the Bloomington, Ill., Pantagraph on Friday. “It’s going to destroy the American dream we’ve come to appreciate and love.”
Johnson, who was speaking at Heartland Community College in Normal, Ill., suggested the only solution to the impending crisis was for all Americans to make sacrifices.
“Folks, you have to realize that everyone is in favor of reducing the national debt as long as it doesn’t impact their lives and what they are interested in,” he said.
In what the Pantagraph described as a "heated exchange with one audience member," Johnson also seemed to deny having taken the Grover Norquist pledge against raising taxes.
“I’m not closed-minded on revenue,” he said.
