In New Campaign Video, President Obama Shows His Love for Israel
- Common Dreams staff
In a new campaign video uploaded Thursday, President Obama shows how he has "strengthened the relationship between the United States and Israel."
The 7-minute long video, titled "America and Israel: An Unbreakable Bond," features President Shimon Peres, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Defense Minister Ehud Barak, Deputy Foreign Minister Danny Ayalon, Israel’s Ambassador to Washington Michael Oren, and former head of the Mossad Efraim Halev praising President Obama.
In the last year, Republican presidential hopefuls’ campaign managers have carried out an aggressive attack on President Obama, saying that he is anti-Israel and weak in the face of Iran, and that he is damaging America’s long-lived alliance with Israel.
Obama and his advisors have been carrying out their own counter-campaign in which senior U.S. officials, with Obama at their head, appear at every single event or conference of Jewish organizations in America. Just a few weeks ago, Obama spoke at the annual meeting of the U.S. Jewish reform movement, and it looks like he will also address the annual AIPAC conference at the beginning of November.
Commenting on the video for The Electronic Intifada, Ali Abunimah writes :
... Obama is legitimizing the role of foreign – although certainly only Israeli leaders – to participate directly in US campaigns. Can we imagine Obama issuing a video in which he is endorsed as pro-Mexican by the President of Mexico, or pro-Canadian by Canada’s prime minister? It’s inconceivable.
